What Makes Your Heart Sing?

28 Jun 2015

Imagine finding gifts inside of you, that you never knew existed?

Imagine doing what you truly loved for a living?

Each and every one of us have unique talents inside, but most of us are unaware of them as society teaches us to forget our childhood dreams and find a 'sensible' job.

As children, we know what we love, which we embrace fearlessly and we believe our dreams of doing something extraordinary for a living are absolutely possible. But no sooner than we discover our passions, our inner voice becomes suppressed by society's obession with what we should, must and have to do, along with the belief, that there must be some kind of sacrifice.

We are also led to believe that only a select few can have job satisfaction and live the life of their dreams. Our vocabulary even supports these beliefs with such phrases as how the other half live, make do, put up with or I should be so lucky. But we're all potentially lucky, if only we stop listening to our heads and look into our hearts. Decisions from our hearts may not always seem logical at the time, but if we have patience and faith, they will reveal themselves to be the best decisions we have ever made.

Who says we can't have it all?

Luckily, times are changing and we are no longer afraid to look inwards and rediscover who we are. Yoga and meditation practices are becoming more and more popular not only due to their powerful physical and psychological effects, but also because of their ability to help us discover what makes our heart sing and unearth the riches that lie within.

My journey

In my heart, I always knew that I wanted my own business, but I didn't know what and to be honest, I was just plain scared. So instead, I tried every job, I had ever been curious about.

Through my teens and university, I took part-time jobs in shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs and after university, I took the serendipity of not landing a design job as the perfect excuse to go travelling.

For the next few years, I funded my travels working as a Divemaster, Estate Agent and Travel Agent. But the best way to appease my itchy feet was to became a TEFL teacher and although terrified of being on stage, I went ahead, and never looked back. For 12 years, it took me all over the world and the UK with teaching and management roles and was one of the best jobs I’d ever had.

But despite its many rewards, I still had that niggling feeling inside of me, that there was more. A job that would allow me to utilise and share everything I'd ever learned, one that would have no boundaries in terms of news ideas and creativity and most importantly, one that would make a difference in other people’s lives...then I discovered Kundalini Yoga.

La Resistance

It was clear after my very first class, that I had found something extraordinary, although I hadn’t considered it as a job prospect, as I was trying to write a children’s book at that time and was determined to become an author. It was only a fews months later, having struggled under regimented self-imposed writing conditions, that I realised I was trying to force something that wasn’t ready to happen. My head was in the writing, but my heart was in Kundalini Yoga as I was constantly talking about how amazing it was and trying to convince everyone to experience it. So it seemed obvious that I should become an instructor and let go of the writing. It was also the path of least resistance.

Letting go

I had always been a control freak, highly tenacious and a perfectionist, so letting go was not part of my vocabulary. But Kundalini yoga made me see clearly. It made me understand that there’s a reason and season for everything and that when you hold on too tightly to the things you want, you block the potential of better things coming into your life. I realised, when you let go, your eyes open and all of a sudden opportunities come flooding your way and you experience flow - otherwise known as synchronicity. When something is right and meant to be, everything falls into place and when you've found the thing that you're here to do, you just know it in your heart...it's like falling in love. Admittedly, I still struggle sometimes with letting go as I am trying to change a habit of a lifetime, but the most important thing is that I am now aware of my resistance. Only then can changes take place.

Life is meant to be easy

I remember when I was first introduced to this concept. I didn't believe it could be true, but it really is. Life is supposed to flow, and so it does, when we listen to our intuition. So the trick is, learning how to let go of control. It’s about understanding the fine balance between taking action and being passive. After all, if you spend hours mixing together the ingredients of your favourite cake, but are too impatient to wait for it the bake, then you’ll end up with a mushy goo…and that’s just a waste.

It takes wisdom, intuition and patience to allow the results of your actions to come into fruition, but it’s not easy, as ‘no pain no gain’ has been ingrained into our psyche for centuries….and it’s hard to let go of.

But we’re in a different age now, the age of Aquarius, which is more heart centred. The world is changing and we are no longer looking to others for direction and guidance. All of the answers lie within, if only we can learn to understand its messages.

Listen

Learning to listen to our inner guidance is the most important thing we can do to lead happy and content lives. When we understand our true nature, we make decisions that are aligned with who we really are and ones that will ultimately fulfil our innermost needs and desires.

My journey of experimentation has led me to Kundalini yoga, which is actually only the beginning as it has opened my mind to so many new possibilities and ideas. What's really amazing is that nothing I’ve learned before has gone to waste. In fact, it is all playing a supporting role in helping me to create a life that is expansive and fulfilling in every way. It has helped me to discover who I am and what I love...and only then, can you discover the kind of work that will bring you real job satisfaction and make your heart truly sing.

“When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds: Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.” Pantanjali

Surrounding ourselves with supportive people who believe in us is also essential to realising our goals and creating the life of our dreams....

Outset Legacy Video

Outset are a government funded organisation, who support people starting up their own business in Torbay.

I was already up and running when I found out about them, but that didn’t matter as I learned things I’d struggled to find out before and most importantly, met so many great people that I now feel a part of something really supportive in the bay. My business is surging forward and expanding now due to their help and support and I can’t thank them enough.

An organisation that encourages people to believe in themselves and develop their talents, which in return brings people together and enhances the local community, is an invaluable service that should always be available to everyone. But funding has run out and yesterday was their last day of business.

However, they are campaigning to get more funding for the Autumn, which will mean more opportunities for all of you out there who have that niggling feeling inside of you, that there’s something more....

If you would like to support their campaign, please send statements explaining why you think Outset is so important for our community:
